Room 221, Wednesday Evening

"Guys? Taunt? Flash? Plasmajack? Seriously, this isn't funny anymore," Vette said, frowning as she spoke into her comm... phone... concoction. Like she'd been doing for a good hour, now. "Would one of you at least tell me you got the thing? It'll be fine if I'm stranded in this stupid place if it wasn't for nothing."

Silence. Vette sighed, shut her frankenphone off, and threw it onto her bed before flopping onto it afterwards, face down. A few moments later she was rolling onto her back, making a frustrated noise, grabbing one of the piggy buns she'd made in Hannibal's class today, and throwing it, hard, at the ceiling.

It stuck there.

"This is the worst world."

... Nina was peering up at the ceiling now too.

"Nooooooo," she said, stepping into the room and flopping back on her bed. The better to stare at the... thing...? "They're called refrigerators. And, like???? I don't understand that???? But at least we know???? Even though the name makes it sound like you're supposed to let food get warm before making it cold again????"

And, okay--

"And what is that?????" She pointed at the thing on the ceiling.

"That," Vette announced, "is a really stupid name. And that," she added, waving a hand at the bun on the ceiling, "is a 'piggy bun.'"

A beat.

"Whatever that is."

Nina squinted at it.

"Is it supposed to be on the ceiling??????"

"I put it there, so I guess so?"

She offered Nina the box of remaining buns.

They were kind of horrifying.

"Wanna give it a friend?"

Nina peered into the box as she took it.

"Like, I don't know???? What if it tries to kill us in our sleep????"

"Worst it's going to do is fall on someone's face," Vette pointed out. And then looked directly up. "My face. The worst it's going to do is fall on my face."

That made her laugh.

"What if I don't want it to fall on your face????? Honestly, Vette!!!!!!"

"Then you better throw it really hard, right?"

Yup, Vette was laughing right back, now.

"Go on, make it count."

She needed that laugh.

"Well, if you say so!!!!!!!"

And, sure, Nina was a skinny teenage girl, but she hit like a pile of bricks when she swung her bookbelt.

Nina took one of the piggies out of the box and, with a grin at Vette, tossed it up at the ceiling with all her might.

"There," Nina said, falling back on her bed. "It looks flatter than yours!!!!!!!"

Vette squinted up at the ceiling.

"... You have one hell of a throwing arm, you know that?"

Remind Vette to never, ever piss off Nina.

"I'm not, like, bad!!!!!!" Nina agreed, since modesty was a no-go here. It wasn't like Vette was a boy Nina was hoping to get with or anything. "Lord Shin says I'm 'quite satisfactory in both physical attack and magic''!!!!!"

And given Lord Shin's reticence, that was quite the compliment.

"That's... actually really neat," Vete decided, still staring up at the piggy bun. "I... don't have either of those things. But I can handle a pair of blasters well."

Nok had made sure of that much, at least!

Nina rolled over onto her stomach, glancing over at Vette.

"Blasters do, like, what they sound like, right?????"

She had to check, given how few things did here.

"And, I don't know, maybe you could use magic????? A lot of people can, in my world, though some can't too. It's all up to latent ability."

"Blasters do exactly what they sound like," Vette comfirmed, and then made twin gun-fingers. "Pew, pew pew."

That was a great explanation, Vette. Well done.

"I... don't think I have any latent ability there, though. With magic, I mean."

Her life would have gone very differently if she had.

"Maybe not," Nina said, shrugging as she sat up. "But, like, I'm not a fully trained Rune Master, so I wouldn't know????? We don't have the magic in us????"

She extended her hands so that Vette could see the runes embedded in her palms.

"The talent is latent, but the runes have to be attached before we can do anything, see????"

Vette leaned in a little to look at those runes thoughtfully.

"Huh. So that's what those are? Magic dealies?"

Well, she could have come up with a worse way to describe them.

"So, how do you know if you have the talent if you don't attach the runes? Or does everybody get runes, just to be sure?"

"They're called runes," Nina said patiently. "And, no, in order to see if you can use them, you go to a Rune Master or Rune Mistress. They're, like, scholars who've studied runes for ages and ages to be able to tell the potential in someone to use them and to be able to attach and remove the runes from people!!!!!"

Nina, you're slipping, that was almost normal punctuation.

She tilted her chin at her right palm. "This one is the lightning rune!!!!!!!! It allows me to call down lightning on enemies. It's best against single foes, though, rather than groups. Then this one," Nina waved her left palm, "is the water rune. It lets me heal people and also helps me protect them too!!!!!"

"Oooooo," Vette said, admiring both in turn. "So one attacky, and one protecty one? The closest I have to your water rune is kolto, and... I mean, I don't even have kolto, here."

She was so angry at that relic. Sheesh.

Nina beamed.

"Yes, that's it exactly!!!!! They don't usually just hand them out to students, like, but because I was going so, so far away, Lady Teresa said I could take two!!!!! There were others I could pick, but I liked being able to do everything!!!!!!!!"

And with her bookbelt, Nina was basically a small, blonde tank. Watch out, worlds.

"What's kolto???????"

Ah, doing everything. There was a thought that made Vette wistful.

"Kolto's this gunk we have at home that makes people heal fast if they get hurt," she explained. "They don't have it here, I don't think. They don't have most things from home here, I'd be surprised if they had kolto, too."
